The annual BSc Information Management for Business programme's Design Sprint took on a new form this Spring Reading Week. Rebranded as the IMB Consult for Good Design Sprint and involving 80 dedicated students from all years of the programme working in collaboration with students from the UCL's Department of Information Studies, the event also saw UCL School of Management partnering with educational charity Svitlo Education. Students were tasked with devising SMART and innovative solutions to real-world challenges faced by Svitlo Education with their active input over a two-day period.

Celebrated annually on 08 March, International Women’s Day commemorates the economic, social, political and cultural achievements of women around the globe. This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is #AccelerateAction, which serves as a global call for solidarity in ensuring gender equality across the globe.A bold message, this year's theme focuses on a global call to action; one that acknowledges the strategies, resources and activities that positively impact women's advancement, and to accelerate their implementation. In recent years, backlash against gender parity has grown yet, as School Director Davide Ravasi notes below, UCL School of Management remains committed to advancing societal progress. The global International Women's Day campaign notes that, at our current rate, it will take five generations before the world can expect to see full gender equality.

UCL School of Management Associate Professor Anthony Klotz recently co-authored an article published in Harvard Business Review assessing the ways in which organisations can retain efficient and capable workers during prosperous labour times. For Anthony and co-authors Chase Thiel, Jay Hardy, Carter Gibson and Andrew Barsa, that answer is simple: promote them.

We are delighted to share that UCL School of Management Assistant Professor Anil Doshi has been named as one of the Strategy Research Foundation’s 2024 grant winners. Anil will receive the funding as part of the Research in Strategy Management (RSM) Grant Programme, which will be used to support his research in strategy and entrepreneurship.

Earlier this month, UCL School of Management Assistant Professor Angela Aristidou was invited to speak at the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris. Held annually, this year's Summit saw the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) launch its Scientific Panel on AI and Economic Inclusion, with Angela joining a panel of AI experts to mark the occasion.

UCL School of Management Associate Professor Colin Fisher recently wrote an article that was published by The Conversation UK discussing the changes in addressing online misinformation announced by Meta earlier this year. While the organisation previously utilised independent third-party factcheckers in an effort to monitor misinformation, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in January that Facebook, Instagram and Threads will be relying on "community notes" in a similar style as Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter).

On Tuesday 18 February, UCL School of Management hosted the inaugural She Shapes AI event and awards ceremony on Level 50 of One Canada Square. She Shapes AI identifies, celebrates and supports female trailblazers around the world in using and developing AI that responsibly contributes to society. On the day, 100 women gathered from around the world to shine a spotlight on inspiring entrepreneurs whose efforts are shaping the use of artificial intelligence to deliver real-world impact. UCL School of Management Assistant Professor Angela Aristidou (pictured right) then opened the evening awards ceremony and convened a workshop on artificial intelligence and governance.

Earlier this month, Lewis James, Senior Data Scientist at Reach plc, joined students on the UCL School of Management’s Digital Strategy & Transformation module to share his deep insights and expertise into AI-led innovation within the fiercely competitive media and publishing industry. The Digital Strategy & Transformation module, led by Dr Rikke Duus, explores how organisations across industry sectors can adapt, evolve and transform to respond to ever-changing market dynamics, customer demands, technology innovation, and economic conditions.

Earlier this month, UCL Innovation and Enterprise hosted the Creating Impact Through Knowledge Exchange Awards and we are delighted to share that eNOugh, an innovative tech start-up born out of UCL School of Management, has received the Most Impactful Start-up Award.

UCL School of Management Associate Professor Bart Vanneste has recently co-authored a research paper which has been published in SSRN alongside Research Fellow Emil Mirzayev and Marco Testini from the University of Miami's Herbert Business School. Entitled 'Artificial Agents and the Evaluation of M&As', the paper explores the impact of generative artificial intelligence on mergers and acquisitions (M&As) and their ability to differentiate between value-creating and value-destroying M&As.

For the second consecutive year, UCL School of Management and Basque Culinary Center partnered to host the On The Road food-tech pitch competition in Canary Wharf. The event brought together food-tech entrepreneurs, industry specialists, and innovative start-ups, fostering a collaborative community dedicated to advancing food technology and sustainability.

Earlier this month, second-year Management Science students took part in Scenario Week on Level 50 of One Canada Square as part of the programme's 'Design' module. Led by UCL School of Management Lecturer Lorenzo Todorow, this​ week-long event saw students working in close collaboration with DHL - the world's largest contract logistics specialist - to provide innovative solutions to their specific business challenges. A key part of the BSc/MSci Management Science programme, Scenario Weeks occur throughout the year and require students to work in teams to address complex interdisciplinary management problems.

UCL School of Management Honorary Associate Professor Chia-Jung Tsay has recently featured in an article published by The New York Times in recognition of her research surrounding natural ability versus hard work. The article, entitled 'No, You Don't Get an A For Effort' addresses the seemingly recent emergence of discussions centred upon whether effort and hard work should trump - or at least match - contributions from formal assessment.

Since graduating from UCL School of Management's Management Science programme in 2023, Charlie has launched his career at Huzzle, a start-up co-founded by fellow UCL School of Management graduate Parham Rakhshanfar. We recently caught up with Charlie - currently Huzzle's Chief of Staff - to find out more about his role at the company, as well as his experiences of the programme and the graduate job market. Understanding the difficulties facing current students and recent graduates, he also shares his advice and reassurance to students, as well as his accomplishments at Huzzle so far.
